This fine classical house can be spotted from the road as you pass through this attractive rolling upland country. Strangely enough the balanced composition belies it’s development for behind that central pedemented portico still stands the early 18th century block built for James Joye who had bought the estate in 1714 from the Marquis of Powis. That splendid portico and the two side wings were in fact added a quarter of a century later by the next owner Maurice Berkeley. For these enrichments he turned to David Hiorne ( circa 1710 -1758 ) of Warwick. He and his brother William often worked for the great Midlands architect Smith of Warwick and indeed succeeded to his business after Smith’s death in 1747.
