Dr Conny Bailey: A Cabinet of Earthly Delights: Unlocking the Neapolitan Cabinets at Lamport Hall

Thomas Isham, 3rd Baronet, loved a good cabinet, and arguably his most prized possessions brought back from Italy were the two monumental, reverse-glass-painted cabinets he acquired while visiting Naples in May 1677. The particular combination of free-standing collectors’ cabinet and reverse-glass painted decoration to this day can be securely located exclusively in Naples where it experienced its absolute peak in the late seventeenth century. Join Dr. Conny Bailey as she delves into the history of our cabinets, and traces their evolution from highly sophisticated, late sixteenth-century highly prized, diplomatic gifts in a Spanish vein, to the imposing interior centrepiece furniture with just a touch of seaside postcard naughtiness that we have in our collection. It will be possible to get an exclusive view of the secret interior of one of our cabinets as part of this talk.
