“Not just another Victorian Church - Benefield’s architecture and place in religious history

30 APR

St Mary’s Parish Church has been described as ‘An important specimen of a sumptuous Tractarian Church’. Partly rebuilt by the Watts Russell family in 1847, it was one of the first churches of the Gothic Revival and an example of enlightened artistic patronage. Yet its stones bear witness to the Tractarian or Oxford Movement which in the years 1833-1845 scandalised Protestant England and led to a crisis of faith. Elton and Benefield were uniquely affected by these events which saw religious conversions with dramatic consequences for families in both parishes.
