Champing, Aldwincle

Mellow medieval church

An unforgettable sleepover in a medieval church. Church camping, or ‘Champing’ began from the quiet village of Aldwincle, one of Northamptonshire’s hidden gems. Aldwincle boasts two medieval churches, but with St Peter’s taking preference for services, All Saints Church was declared redundant, and in 1976 vested to the care of The Churches Conservation Trust. In 2015 the Trust set up ‘Champing’ from Aldwincle, creating a sustainable use for churches to help raise money towards repairs and to keep historic churches open for future generations.

Champing is a bit like glamping, you arrive to find your camping beds and chairs set up for you, along with tea and coffee making provisions. You have sole use of the church, so it’s only you and your friends or family staying the night. Lanterns and fairy lights are also set out, as All Saints doesn’t have a power supply, giving you the chance for a complete get-away amongst the cosy setting of glorious limestone arcades and pillars. You’ll have a sound night’s sleep, surrounded by solid walls and a robust roof, recently repaired, made possible by a grant awarded by the Cultural Recovery Fund for Heritage. And in the morning you can even order a hot breakfast, cooked and delivered to your church door.

The large open interior is perfect for a weekend adventure with friends, special occasion celebrations with the whole family gathered together, or for those simply seeking the comfort an ancient space provides. And with bookings already filling up, Aldwincle is looking a popular choice for those seeking some this summer, with dates available from the 12 April until the end of October.
